Proposing to the one you love to say ‘Yes’ for marriage might be one of the most herculean tasks for some in the world, but sometimes choosing the perfect ring can be considered as half the job done. In a world where the options seem to be too many, it can become a tuff task to choose the perfect ring that would melt a girl’s heart. Antique engagement rings are one of the popular choices due to their uniqueness and charm.
Antique engagement rings otherwise also known as “Vintage engagement rings”, refer to the ones which are usually more than 50 years old, whereas the rest are commonly known as estate rings. Mostly known for their uniqueness and eye catching appearance, these rings are available in a variety of forms based on the time during which they were made, with each having its distinct charm.
These rings are often very eye catching and well crafted compared to other rings and appeal to the eclectic tastes of consumers of today. The wedding with these rings will be fabulous.
Based on the time period, these antique rings have had different names and different styles. One of the oldest styles of antique engagement rings was known as the “Victorian Antique engagement rings”. Rings of this period were mostly made of rose or yellow gold. Pearl was one of the most preferred gems used during this period. However, these rings are not suitable for daily use. Another style of antique rings known as the “Art Nouveau” came during the period of 1895 to 1900. These rings were mostly inspired from nature such as birds, insects, flowers, serpents, the female face etc. Flowers like irises, orchids, water lilies and birds like the peacock and swans were commonly used in designing rings of “Art Nouveau” style.
Gold and silver were the metals mostly used along with natural materials such as ivory and horn. Gemstones such as opal, moonstones and pearl were very popular. During the period of 1900-1920, the “Edwardian” style of antique engagement rings came into picture. This style was also known as the “garland style” as it was inspired by garlands of flowers and objects such as ribbons, stars, crescents and bows. Unlike the previous styles, Platinum became the most commonly used metal. Gems like diamonds (rose cut) and sapphires were used in this style. Then came the “Art Deco” style of engagement rings during the period 1920-1930. This style was influenced from stylized flower baskets and vases, graceful animals and geometric and angular shapes. Platinum was again used widely while white gold was used for less expensive rings.
Gemstones such as emeralds from India, sapphires, rubies and onyx were used in these styles. The “Art Deco” is presently the most admired form of antique engagement rings preferred by most of the newly engaged pairs.
When looking for antique engagement rings, it becomes important to be able to find just the perfect rings. Due to the age of the rings, it is important to check for cracks in softer gems such as the emerald and pearl. Before buying antique rings, it is important to look into factors like the color, condition, clarity and age of the ring. Diamonds no matter how small they may be are often ridiculously expensive. So it can be a good idea to look for antique diamond rings made during the period of 1930 to 1940 as they usually look bigger since they were placed in an ornately carved setting. In a time when people are looking for alternatives to buying a brand new engagement ring, antique rings are fast gaining popularity and are easily available. To add to it these rings are usually moderately priced, compared to other rings, so they don’t burn a hole in the buyers pocket. These rings are easily available in pawn shops, estate sales, antique stores and jeweler stores. It can also be a good idea to look for these rings online.
In a time when everyone wants to be unique and are looking for a ring that suits their very own style, antique engagement rings are just the perfect option because of their inherent charm, superior craftsmanship and moderate pricing.
Looking at these factors, the popularity of these rings can only be expected to increase with time. It is difficult to think of a scenario where a perfectly chosen, beautiful antique engagement ring won’t melt a girl’s heart.
